EdTechProfile by the Numbers – January 2008

The New Year comes with a few needs for having complete and up-to-date information in EdTechProfile. Traditionally, the annual California School Technology Survey (CSTS) has its kickoff in mid-January. Again this year, the California Department of Education (CDE) is requesting that all schools and district offices complete the CSTS. The CSTS information is used not only by the CDE to determine the status of technology in classrooms and across districts, it also provides needed information to legislators to assess the funding needs for technology hardware as well as professional development for the upcoming fiscal year. The CDE’s Educational Technology Department uses the information to lobby for continued ed tech funding for schools up and down the state, and to encourage funding for professional development and support of in-place technology. Data from both CSTS and EdTechProfile provide this much needed information to make informed decisions on future funding.

A second reason for having staff update their EdTechProfile information is that many district technology plans will be expiring in June 2009. While more than a year away seems like a long time, the filing dates for uploading completed district tech plans are October 2008 (Cycle A) and December 2008 (Cycle B). Many districts that will need to update their tech plans will be doing so over the summer months. As such, they will want to have updated EdTechProfile data, as well as accurate CSTS data long before the end of the 2007-2008 school year to begin work on their tech plans.

A third reason for updating EdTechProfile information is that many districts begin planning end of year and summer professional development for their teachers. Having EdTechProfile data on hand can assist planners in looking at specific needs at their school sites or within the district which match the needs of the goals and objectives of current district tech plans, and to make sure that the annual benchmarks are being attained.

It is suggested that districts schedule a regular time each year for staff to update their EdTechProfile accounts. Many districts have already established an annual “event” to make this happen. Some districts have chosen the beginning of the new calendar year to make summer professional development planning easier. Others have chosen Spring to coincide with their annual report to the school board on reaching their district tech plan benchmarks. While others have chosen to make updating EdTechProfile accounts part of the end of school year check out process. Regardless of which best fits the needs of your school site or district, EdTechProfile accounts should be updated on an annual basis.

Most importantly, continued Enhancing Education Through Technology Formula (EETT-F) and Competitive (EETT-C) funding is dependent on regular updating of EdTechProfile accounts. For details on district requirements for EETT-F and EETT-C funding, go to <http://www.edtechprofile.org/requirements.php>.
When it comes time to have your local staff update their EdTechProfile accounts, be sure to follow the instructions at <http://ctap10.org/~gregg/ETP/updatingETP.htm> to make the process as painless as possible for all!
