The Chumash tribe was located from modern day Pismo to below Oxnard in California. They had settlements along the coast inland to the Cuyama River. Many of the modern names for these central coast towns were derived from the original Chumash name.

Way of Life

The Chumash hunted shellfish, clams, crabs.They used baskets to catch sardines with cactus bait. Many different kinds of plants grew wild in California. They gathered seeds in the early summer and red fruit in fall or winter. They gathered any time of year. 

The Chumash made baskets and canoes. They made the canoes from redwood logs that washed up on  shore. The Chumash made spears from stones and wooden poles. 

The women decorated themselves with shells bracelets headbands, and necklaces.Women sewed small shells to animal skin shirts. 

The Chumash traded shells, nuts, beads, otter skin, obsidian and soapstone. They received pottery, blankets, and hematite. They traveled by canoe to the Channel Islands. 

Villages

The Chumash villages were different sizes. Some had as many as a thousand people. 

Work was divided between the women and men. The men were the hunters. Women gathered nuts and roots, took care of the children and the older people. The men hunted and fished.

They lived in dome-shaped homes made from willows. They bent the poles and tied them together with saplings. They also used tules to make shelters.

Culture

The Chumash had a festival that included songs and dances that were really religious.The dancers wore special occasions

Some games that the Chumash played were seed marble and knucklebone. Those two games were played with only two people. Hoop and Pole was a very popular game. Hoop and Pole was played by boys and men. The hoop was rolled along the ground, then a person has a spear and tries to get it through. Shinny was like hockey. Shinny can be played village against village. Hand games is a game of legerdamain.

The Chumash believed there were three worlds. The underworld was the center of all evil. The middle world was earth. The upper world was where the great gods lived. Shamans were religious leaders. They honored the earth goddess, Shup or Hutash.

Legacies

The most famous invention of the Chumash was the plank canoe, called a tomol. This fast boat was the best way to travel. The Chumash left Indian foot trails that the Spanish used, then the railroads and paved highways. Their uses of baskets and how to make baskets especially coiled baskets. The workmanship found in the baskets is the finest in North America.The Chumash left hundreds of caves decorated with pictographs form Morro Bay to Malibu.The pictographs expressed their feelings of the supernatural world and are found by permanent water sources.

Similarities and Differences
The Maidu, Mojave, Chumash, Yurok, and the Paiutes all played hoop and pole and hand games.The Chumash had a game called Shinny.The Maidu and Yurok tribes both had tattoos, but the Chumash did not tattoo their bodies.
