The Chumash were found near the coast of  Santa Barbara. You would think it would be impossible for the Chumash to make a canoe, but if they could not make a canoe, they could not go to the Tushibo to trade. They made them out of the redwood logs washing up on shore.
Way of Life

The Chumash gathered clams. They hunted for small and large  animals. The Chumash fished  for  salmon, clams, mussels, trout, and abalone.  They ate different kinds of wild plants. The Chumash did not trade among themselves. They did not plant crops. They had a famous canoe  called ''tomol''. They made the canoes out of redwood trees. The Chumash traded animal fur for  jewelry and traded salmon for tools. They also traded clams for pottery or weapons. They went to buy canoes and went to the mainland to trade beads, slamon, shells, tools, and other things  they needed.

The Chumash's favorite games were hoop and pole, shinny, knucklebone, jack, and hand  game. Hoop in pole was a popular game. It was played by boys and men. The hoop was made of willow. It was rolled along the ground. The hoop was rolling and they tried throw the spear inside the hoop. Shinny was like hockey. A village would play against another village. Hand game was a game of legerdemain, sleight of hand. You put  the white bone in one hand and the black bone in the other. Then you need to find the white bone.

The Chumash lived in little houses called aps. They were not very big. They made the houses out of willow poles. The poles were set in a circle they made a dome shape in the ground to form a house and left a hole for smoke and fire on top of the roof

The Chumash villages were next to rivers to get water. The chief's house was the largest in the village. The Chumash had storage huts to store food and other items. The cemetery was outside of the village.

If you walked in Chumash  backcountry you would find the cave decorated with rock painting. Scientists don't know what the rock  painting really was. Scientists think that the designs are a plan for them or warning that means they shouldn't go there.

Some of the Chumash names were Aquitsu'm, Asuskwa', Awha'y, Helo, Humaliwo, Kasma'li, Khalam, and Kuyaam.  These names are names from towns that are are still here today.  The Chumash left town names. Most people in the towns that the Chumash left  names are Native Americans.

 Similarities and Differences

The Yurok and Chumash both play hoop and pole, and they both fish. They have different houses.  The Chumash built canoes out of redwood, but the Yurok built them out of cedar.
